we're invited to a hospice party hosted by one of the partner physicians at kaiser. we know what you're thinking, this is going to be a morbid event, but it turns out to be a pool party. our host, mario and his wife, janice, live near griffith park in los feliz. it's hotter than heck and we watch the temperature rise from a mild 70 to a scorching 94 as we drive to the east part of town. we're always reminded why we haven't yet moved.
we meet with several of susan's colleagues and their significant others. david and his wife louanne brought their boys daniel and dave. the kids stay in the pool until the sun sets and reluctantly come out after it's cooled down to the point where they're shivering. won and her husband william entertain with stories of foreign adventure and hiking. apparently, won was a student of william's when he was a college math professor. sounds like the meeting of teacher and student isn't all that uncommon, a la jim and susan. hue gorges himself on cucumber soup, swiss rolls, spinach salad, and chocolate cheese cake. upon departure, we get a tour of the milch household, complete with a picture wall detailing the growth of their two artistic daughters.
the next day the wangsters labor on labor day. unfortunately, when you're per diem, you don't get paid unless you work. so susan and hue spend the day at their respective work places. they'll be taking a make-up day once susan is hired and receives paid vacation. the following day, we join barbara at the bowl in her box seats. we miss the shuttle to the hollywood bowl by exactly one minute. hue is tempted to cut off the bus, but rethinks playing chicken with the moving vehicle. so we're stuck driving to the bowl ourselves. we followed the bus on the 101 and traffic wasn't too bad for a weeknight, and we then got lucky by finding parking for $5. on stage this evening are the brazilian classical guitar artists, the assad brothers. it's another pleasant evening with barbara, albeit a short one.
